Tales of life and love are better in French
France is widely recognised as the birthplace of film, courtesy of Auguste and Louis Lumière, who invented the cinématographe and produced L’Arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat in Paris in 1895. France has a proud cinema history and is the most successful film industry in Europe and the third largest film market in the world.

You can experience the magic of French cinema when Alliance Francaise de Brisbane presents French Film Fridays. On the last Friday of every month you can settle into a comfy chair, let the language of love wash over you and immerse yourself in French culture and cinematic stories of la vie et l’amour (life and love). Why does it always sound so much better in French? You don’t have to be French and no knowledge of French is required; all movies will be helpfully subtitled in English.

Night Photography Course for Beginners in Brisbane

Saturday 1st of March – $99 – 4 places left

Movies screen at 5.30 pm and entry is FREE. So instead of a few amicable (and expensive) Friday evening beers at the pub why not see a movie with friends instead, and still have time to go out to dinner later. Alliance Francaise is conveniently located at 262 Montague Road, West End.

The program for the next three months has been announced and below is a short description of the films on offer.

Friday, 31st January – Paris à tout prix (Paris at all Costs)

This is a 2013 comedy about Maya, a Moroccan born fashionista and stylist in Paris who is unexpectedly deported back to her family and country of birth. It’s a tale of culture shock, family relationships and of course, love. It has a running time of 95 minutes.

Friday 28th February – Les gamins (Kids)

In this recent release a musician finds unexpected friendship with his girlfriend’s father and together they seek release from their restraints and responsibilities by re-living their childhoods. It has a running time of 95 minutes.

Friday 28th March – Donnant, donnant (Fair is Fair)

This 2010 comedy sees an escaped prisoner on the run from authorities make an unlikely bargain with the young woman who discovers him. It has a running time of 100 minutes.

Alliance Francaise promotes French culture and language in Brisbane. Apart from cinema you can also see art exhibitions, learn French, or enrol in photography workshops, and if you are a member you can use the library or join the bookclub. There are other membership benefits which are explained online here. Membership costs $55 for adults, $35 for children and $85 for a family.

If your Friday night calendar is looking a little bare over the next few months escape to France, if only figuratively, on the last Friday of each month.
